By Sherry Morris

Excerpt:
Tammy pounded on the front door of her sister Donna’s Virginia townhouse. Her pink manicure reflected back from the clean etched glass. A hulking monster of a dog placed two paws on the other side of the door. Tammy stumbled backwards and grabbed the wrought iron railing. The canine emitted only a pitiful whimper.

Maybe Oh-Donna’s in the shower. The sky began to spit on Tammy. She descended the twelve brown brick steps and marched around the matching path to the rear of her sister’s end unit townhouse. She opened the gate on the six foot tall privacy fence. The first five feet of it was board on board, the top foot was lattice. After latching the gate, she dashed under the deck.

Tammy tried the French doors in the basement. They were unlocked. She stomped in and slammed the door behind her. Immediately turning her nose up at the overdone red walls and carpet, she hurried across a room filled with guitars, a piano, harmonicas, violins and recording equipment. Tammy took the stairs two at a time. Reaching the top, she flung open a white steel door and was greeted by Scooby Doo-ette. “Hi girl, remember me? How are you, Sugar?”

Something wasn’t right.

The dog was nearly emaciated. Her ribs were showing and she wasn’t her boisterous self.

“Eew! What’s that smell?” The kitchen reeked of urine and there were three piles of poop on the hardwood floor.

“You poor thing! Oh-Donna went away and forgot about you.” Tammy unlocked the French Doors in the kitchen. The dog bolted out onto the deck. She filled her water bowl and then scooped three cups of kibbles into the chrome food dish. The whimpering dog slumped on the pressure treated wood deck, surrounded by terra cotta pots of wilted flowers. Tammy let her back in. The Great Dane immediately chomped down the food and lapped up the water.

The stench in the kitchen gagged her. Tammy opened the cabinet under the kitchen sink and dug out a trash bag, disinfectant and yellow rubber gloves. Yanking seven paper towels off the roll on the pistol-gray granite counter, Tammy went to work cleaning the mess, all the while mumbling, “Oh-Donna you good for nothing bitch. How could you do this to a poor defenseless doggie?” Tammy breathed through her mouth, trying desperately not to inhale. “And how could you be so cruel as to cut me off from Daddy’s money?” A tear rolled down her cheek. “How could you? You’ll pay for this little sister of mine.”

Tammy placed the smelly bag out on the deck and then shoved the cleaning supplies back under the sink.

The air conditioning kicked on. A cold shiver raced up her spine. “Where is the thermostat Scooby Doo-ette? Hunh girl?” The dog brushed up against her silk-stockinged leg and licked her throat. She petted the Great Dane. The pair headed down the hallway, in search of the thermostat.

Tammy stopped in front of the living room, where she glimpsed her sister lying on the sofa.

Lifeless.

Tammy screamed.

The dog cried and licked Tammy’s hand.

“Ohmagod, she’s dead!” Hey, wait a minute, if Oh-Donna is dead, then that means she can’t be executrix of Daddy’s will and so I can get put back on the dole and hey, wait a minute—she’s an old spinster, so I logically will inherit her estate as well…

Tammy sighed. Oh, I’ll probably have to split it with Perry. But at least I’ll get a nice chunk of change.

She looked the corpse over. Her sister lay in the fetal position, with a smile curling the corner of her pale lips. What an angelic porcelain face. Even now, a twinge of jealousy swirled. Oh-Donna was blessed with naturally wavy blonde hair and flawless Caucasian skin. Tammy never did feel like they were real sisters. Even though the Payne’s adopted Tammy as a baby, she never warmed up to their natural daughter, Oh-Donna. But Tammy did feel an allegiance to their son Perry. They were more alike.

Tammy stepped closer, stumbling over the clumsy dog. Oh for the love of Prada, her tummy is moving up and down with her breathing. There goes my plan. “Wake up Oh-Donna.”

She didn’t move. Tammy shook her arm. “Wake up! Now! Get up Oh-Donna.”

No reaction.

Tammy remembered Farts (their late father’s proctologist friend) telling her and Perry that Oh-Donna had a brain disorder which caused her to fall asleep at weird times. She recollected discovering her sleeping in the walk-in closet under the stairs at their parents’ house and then she’d fainted in front of her moments later.

Tammy hugged her chilled arms, wishing the damned air conditioner would shut off. “Wake up Oh-Donna. Wake the frick up, you brain damaged witch. Wake up sissy-girl.”

Her sister didn’t respond. It was as though she was in a coma…

“Ohmagod. Oh-Donna is in a coma! I’m so sorry sweetie! You poor thing. That’s why the dog was starved and crapped in the house. How long have you been like this?”

Tammy snatched the cordless phone from the end table and punched in her brother’s cell phone number.

“Judge Payne here.”

“Perry! Oh-Donna’s in a coma! And the dog pooped all over the house and she’s gonna die and that bitch cut me off, I’ve been evicted—.”

“What? Slow down. Oh-Donna’s in a coma? Where are you?”

“I’m at her house. I can’t wake her up.”

“Hang up and call nine-one-one.”

Tammy breathlessly squealed, “I don’t have time to look up the number for nine-one-one. What if she dies?” Sweet Jesus forgive me for my earlier thoughts. I didn’t mean them. Honest I didn’t. Her stomach churned. I’m gonna go to Hell for my thoughts. Tears deposited mascara in her eyes. She closed them tightly.

Perry barked, “Call an ambulance. The number for nine-one-one is nine-one-one Goddamit! I’ll be over as soon as I can. Call me and tell me what hospital they’re taking her to.” He hung up.

Tammy conjured up the last time her sister fainted, she’d thrown a glass of water in her face and she woke up. “Water!” She sprinted to the kitchen and picked up the dog’s water bowl. She filled it and jogged down the hallway, sloshing a trail behind her. The Great Dane lapped it off the hardwood floor. In the foyer, Tammy tripped on the edge of a sisal area rug and emptied the bowl onto her designer suit. “Darn you Oh-Donna!” Her scream pierced so loudly the dog skedaddled upstairs.

“Ohhh…” Her sister groaned.

Tammy dropped the chrome bowl and scrambled to her side. She picked up her arm, pumping it up and down, slapping her hand. “Oh-Donna, wake up Oh-Donna!”

Her sister murmured, “No…! No…! Not the Donna song…” Her smile morphed into a scowl.

Tammy slapped her sister’s face with both hands. “Wake up Oh-Donna. Now!”

“No. No. Go back. Ash…ley…”

I’ve tailored FlyLady Marla Cilley’s principals to incorporate decorating in with the cleaning. It worked very well for my daughter and I last Christmas. I had let my daily cleaning routine slip a bit, and the family was creating hot spots (clutter piles) all over the first floor.

Hubby had a new job in which he wore a uniform and traveled each week. So all of his work clutter: garment bag, duffel bag, files, accessories and paperwork land in the opening between the foyer and living room.

Darling daughter’s text books, school supplies, homework, jigsaw puzzle, Instant Immersion language CD Roms, Pokemon cards, stuffed animals, shoes and assorted clothing could be found from the steps, foyer, living room, dining room, office, family room and kitchen.

Darling son’s clutter was limited to a jacket on the railing and a pair of shoes.

Moe, our hyperactive attention deficit disorder yellow Labrador retriever managed to toss throw pillows, sherpa blanket, bone fragments and licked clean sour cream containers throughout the house.

This was my strategy: Set my timer for 15 minutes. Start it and daughter and I would pick a room and start putting things away until the time ran out.

Then I would restart the timer for 15 minutes again and we would begin assembling the Christmas tree until the timer went off.

Then I would restart the timer for 15 minutes and we would get back to cleaning where we left off.

The last quarter hour we set the timer and rested for 15 minutes. This was the hardest part actually, not doing anything but sipping tea and watching TV Land.

When the timer went off, we got back to work, alternating 15 minutes of cleaning with decorating. In under three hours, the first floor was company clean enough, the tree was trimmed, the empty boxes were stacked in the dining room (I needed to find a place to keep them, I don’t want them to go back in the attic.) and I had started the laundry.

This alternating system is good to stave off burnout. You don’t feel overwhelmed, like you’ll never get everything done. You find yourself working not only smarter but faster and getting a bit of a cardio workout.

Don’t forget to rest the last quarter hour. I think it’s the key to peace.

If we can do it, so can you. Happy holidays!

At some point, virtually everyone’s life is touched in some way by breast cancer. Whether it’s a friend or family member, or even yourself, the journey is one of courage and compassion.
“Few things reveal character as immediately and profoundly as the way someone makes love. And since the best stories are always character driven, what better way to get to know the players than by the way they make love? Call it erotic fiction if you like — it certainly is erotic — but once you get past the heat and the breathlessness, you’ll see these stories for what they really are: tales of the intensely private, the palpably real, the profoundly human.” – Barry Eisler, NYT Bestselling Author

I wrote WISH UPON A DJINN as Sammie Jo Moresca, an erotic Christmas fantasy romantic comedy years ago. The rights were tied up twice with ePubs which went belly up. Phaze has finally released it as a $2 eBook novella.

Years of wedded bliss have denigrated into mundane routines for frumpy housewife Kim and her hunky firefighter husband, Roger. With another holiday season in full swing, Kim is feeling overwhelmed, unattractive and jealous of his sexy coworker, a female firefighter who knows how to have fun. What this couple needs is some time away from the kids, and when two djinns come to visit one stormy night, they rediscover their cooling embers can be reignited into a love inferno.

Lucille Ball and Cary Grant make cameo appearances!

Ellora’s Cave is raising prices on all of its imprints, including my Cerridwen Press book, Hundred Dollar Bill by Sherry Morris. They are adding the search inside feature at Amazon, and the higher price allows Amazon more leeway for deeper perceived discounts. The prices at the publisher’s site will also increase accordingly. Before you go thinking they are plain greedy, the new prices will be in line with what other publishers charge for trade paperbacks.

My book went from $7.99 to $14.99! It’s the same book, no new content, no pop-up hunks or free $100 inside.

You can still purchase Hundred Dollar Bill, by Sherry Morris for $7.99 at:

Barnes and Noble

Borders

I don’t know how much longer the lower price will be available. If you have some favorite Ellora’s Cave or Cerridwen Press authors, you might want to stock up on books before the increase. After that, you’ll just have to wait for a sale

The year is 1945. Roosevelt is President. World War II is coming to a head. Thieves, spies and other wise guys are working everywhere…including in branches of the U.S. government.Chloe Lambert is a sweet little thing whom mothers love to love and sailors love to pinch. She’s also a sharp-tongued Secret Service agent—a Secret Service agent who has been framed for murder by a band of counterfeiters.Mike Taurus, also an agent, is tough as nails, cool as ice and devilishly handsome. He also has a past with Chloe. As the two of them make a mad dash from Washington, D.C. to Miami Beach, they’ll stop at nothing to solve this monumental caper. It’s a made-for-the-movies adventure that Alfred Hitchcock could only wish he’d dreamed up himself!

I’m an Officer of Election in Virginia. I arrived at the polling place at 4:45 A.M. and people were already lined. up. The polls opened at 6:00 A.M. We had an 80% turnout at our precinct! 2461 people voted in person. Approximately 400 additional people from our precinct had filed absentee ballots.

It took us seven hours to get all of the voters inside the elementary school auditorium, and it was raining. We desperately needed two more officials. One to greet the voters and lead them inside, and one to relieve us for potty and water breaks.

At our dual party primary in February, we had to tell the voters to state if they wanted to vote in the Republican primary or the Democratic primary. Some of the men got angry and left. Three women cried as they choked out their choice. So I was very worried about what would happen if voters wore campaign tees and buttons and we had to ask them to cover up, because that constitutes campaigning, which is against the law within 40 feet of a polling place. I didn’t see any. I did tell several people to hang up their cell phones and they all did so immediately.

Our citizens were very series and really wanted to vote. Most people handed me three forms of ID: Their voter registration card, their military ID, and their drivers license. One of the three would have sufficed.

Only two incidents and I wasn’t involved. One guy vehemently refused to show ID and one guy tried bullying the chief into letting him vote. He finally brought a party lawyer with him on his third attempt. Nope, he didn’t get to vote, because he was not registered. We think he might have been a “plant”.

I was on edge because an observer from one of the parties was over my shoulder when I worked the poll books. My back was tight and I ached all over. Boy was I shocked when the polls closed and she thanked me for doing a great job!

Two proud Dads took pictures of their sons voting for the first time.

Our optical scanner maxed out on us and so did our computer touch screen, aka the DRE. I collected paper ballots, looked each voter in the eyes and promised each person their vote would be counted. A Dick Cheney look alike called Chuck finally came and fixed everything. I was able to feed all the ballots in and we didn’t have to hand count them.

Any registered voter who asked me for help, I made sure their special needs were met and they successfully voted their hearts.

We only had one ballot unaccounted for. We’re pretty sure a young man left without casting it. We were very shocked to have a less than half of one percent error ratio.

It took us 45 minutes to pack up, but 2 hours and 15 minutes for eleven people to do the paperwork. Didn’t leave until after 10:00 P.M.

Quantico Marine Corps Base is in our county, so we had a heavy military turn out. McCain won our precinct. One write in vote for Hillary Clinton for Prez and one for Mickey Mouse for Congress.

I felt proud to have gone above and beyond to uphold the laws of Virginia and the Constitution of the United States on the third most historic day thus far in my lifetime. Man on the moon and 9/11 being the others.

My Mister Nineteen counted the 7,000 absentee ballots at the county registrar’s office. Obama won their votes. He finished at 9:00 P.M.

How was your Election Day experience?
